How Many Days Should I Spend in Bhutan?

When planning a trip to Bhutan, it’s important to carefully consider how many days you intend to spend there.

Cost Factor

Bhutan is a comparatively expensive country to visit. The Bhutanese government charges visitors USD 100 daily– termed as the Sustainable Developmental Fee (SDF). The SDF excludes costs for flight tickets, hotel, food, and a guide.

Keeping the cost factor in mind, some travellers might choose to spend less number of days in Bhutan, which makes perfect sense. Having worked in the tourism industry for some time, I feel that it is better for travellers to make a second trip to Bhutan, rather than trying to fit everything in their first visit. Often, due to the limited information available about Bhutan internationally, many travelers treat their first trip as an orientation.

Season

If you visit during the low season (June–September), you might be able to score discounts with hotels and airlines, which could impact the number of days you spend here. While we’ve welcomed guests who stayed as briefly as three nights or as long as a month, we recommend spending at least a week in Bhutan. However, that suggestion comes with a caveat.

How to Explore Bhutan?

To make the most of your weeklong trip to Bhutan, mix-match your itinerary. For a more authentic travel experience, research or ask the tour operator of your choice, for offbeat and less touristy sites, along with the highly sought after ones such as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike, if that’s what you like.

We also suggest exploring Bhutan on foot. Travelers can gain much more by walking around places like Thimphu, the country’s capital. Another way to make most of your trip is to see Bhutanese night life, even if it’s something you don’t typically do.

As a traveller myself, I feel that experiencing a country at night can be far more exhilarating. It can offer a personal way to understand and connect with a place’s culture.
