National airline Drukair is launching a a new route connecting Kolkata, India to Dhaka, Bangladesh. There are presently very few flights between the two cities, but Drukair believes there is ample potential traffic to justify the routing, and the move will increase the utility of the airline’s planes. Discussions are also underway to extend Drukair service to Hong Kong.
In addition, a memorandum of understanding has been signed which allows Tashi Air to fly to Bangkok. This will augment service previously only provided by Drukair and Thai Airways. The new routes will greatly enhance the tourism industry of Bhutan. The Paro-Bangkok route is the most popular carrying over 72,000 passengers in 2012.
