Located in the Tang Valley, Pema Choeling Nunnery is on the way to Tang Ugyen Choling Palace. Established by Gangtey Tulku in 2001, the nunnery is home to over 100 nuns and serves as a school, or Shedra.
A typical day for the nuns begins at 5 am and continues until evening, with studies often conducted by kerosene lamp due to the lack of electricity. The nuns grow their own food and study various subjects, including philosophy, Dzongkha Bhutan’s national language, and debate.
Nunneries are relatively rare in Bhutan, making Pema Choeling Nunnery a unique and significant institution.
