Tharpaling Monastery, originally a Drukpa Kagyu school, underwent a significant transformation when it was converted into a Nyingma institution by Longchenpa. Longchenpa, an 18th-century Tibetan yogi who was briefly exiled from his homeland, is known by several names, the most common to Bhutanese being Ngaki Wangpo. He is revered as one of the most powerful figures in the Nyingma sect.
This monastery holds historical and spiritual importance, having been a meditation retreat for great Buddhist saints, including Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. Situated on the same road leading to Mebartsho, Tharpaling is about a two-hour drive from Bumthang town.
Visitors to Tharpaling Monastery can experience the tranquil atmosphere where these spiritual masters once meditated and immerse themselves in the profound Nyingma teachings that continue to influence Bhutanese Buddhism.
