Sitting atop a ridge, Lhuntse Dzong, built in the 16th century by Minjur Tempa, the ruler (penlop) of Trongsa, serves as the administrative and religious seat of Lhuntse Dzongkhag. The dzong was built on the site of a 15th-century meditation center, adding to its historical significance. The dzong’s seven lhakhangs (temples) are open to visitors. A small temple within the dzong was built by Pema Lingpa’s son, Kuenga Wangpo. The two-day Lhuntse Tshechu festival, held annually, attracts crowds from both Lhuntse and neighboring districts.
