Changlimithang Archery Ground

Changlimithang is the archery ground beside Thimphu’s national stadium, where club teams shoot at weekends. Bhutanese archery is played over roughly 145 metres, with singing, dancing and heckling between shots. Free to watch; twenty minutes is usually enough, and often isn’t.

What you’re watching

Two teams, shooting the length of the range and back. The target is about the size of a paperback and stands at roughly 145 metres — near enough twice an Olympic range, at a mark a fraction of the size. People hit it.

The archery itself is only half of it. Each team dances and sings to put the other off while they shoot, the commentary is continuous and merciless, and a hit is answered by the shooting team dancing in a line at the target end. Teammates stand near the target while arrows are in the air, by long tradition, and this is normal.

Datse is the national sport, and at Changlimithang it is played by club sides in front of whoever turns up, which usually includes a good crowd.

Watching safely

One rule, and it is not decorative: stand exactly where your guide puts you. Arrows travel the full range at speed, spectators and players stand close to the targets, and a visitor drifting for a better photograph is the one variable nobody has planned for.

When

Weekends are the reliable bet, with some weekday evenings as well. There is no published fixture list, so your guide checks what’s on. Tournament season clusters around Losar in February and the National Day period.

The ground itself

The archery range sits beside Changlimithang Stadium, Bhutan’s national sports ground, in the middle of the city — and on the site of the 1885 Battle of Changlimithang, which settled the internal conflicts of the period in favour of Ugyen Wangchuck and led, twenty-two years later, to his becoming Bhutan’s first king. A country’s decisive battlefield, now its favourite place to shoot arrows and sing at each other.
