Trashiyangtse is home to two dzongs, the old and the new, both of which still stand today. The old dzong, known as Dongdi Dzong, now functions as a monastery. It was originally named after the Dongdi River, which once flowed beside it. The old dzong has a more temple-like appearance, contrasting with the newer dzong.
The key difference between the two is their location. The new dzong is situated on a flat area, closer to the main town, making it more accessible. In contrast, the old dzong’s position reflects its historic roots and traditional setting.
