Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, also called Wangdue Dzong, is an important fortress in Bhutan. It was founded by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1638. In Bhutan’s early history, it was the second most important district for governing the country.
Sadly, a fire destroyed the original dzong in 2012. It was rebuilt and completed in 2022 using modern building techniques. The new dzong even has an earthquake detector to ensure safety.
The dzong is in a strategic location, giving rulers easy access to nearby districts. This made it very important for both administration and defense.
