Lakes, or “Tsho,” play an important role in Bhutanese life, being sacred sites and homes of protective deities. They are revered for the stories they hold and the power they have over the communities living below them.
The story of Buli Tsho dates back to the 17th century. It is a tale of love and reunion between a brother and a sister who found their way to Bhutan after turmoil in Tibet. The sister, a mermaid, initially settled in one location, which turned into a lake. However, over time, the lake became polluted, prompting it to be relocated further south. Locals make yearly offerings to the mermaid to prevent calamities and harm from affecting the community.
