Climate summit held in Bhutan

Bhutanese Glacier River Four countries will come together this October to discuss climate change during the Bhutan Climate Summit 2011 in an attempt to make a difference. Ban­gladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and India were chosen for the Summit because of common factors like being situated in the southern watershed of the eastern Himalayas. The summit is expected to address four key themes:

• Ensuring food security and livelihood
• Securing the natural fresh water systems of the Himalayas
• Securing biodiversity and ensuring its sustainable use
• Ensuring energy security and enhancing alternative technologies

The summit is also expected to address issues such as health and disaster risks related to climate change. After the summit a political commitment at the highest level in the form of summit declaration endorsing a 10 year regional road map for adaption to climate change in the eastern Himalayas’ sub-region for ensuring food, water and energy security is expected. The governments of Ban­gladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and India agreed to convene the summit recognizing the im­pact of global climate mani­festing at a rapid pace in the Himalayas. The Bhutan Climate Summit 2011 will be held on October 14.
