Bhutan Travel: The case against travel in the fall

in Paro

While fall might be the ideal month to travel to Bhutan, especially weather wise, there are reasons to avoid traveling during the season.

Reasons to avoid traveling in the fall

  1. In a destination like Bhutan, where fall (late September- November) travel is often over-hyped, hotels remain fully booked, making it difficult to get better rates.
  2. Short Season. While fall is the perfect season, not just for travel to Bhutan, but even for everyday life, it is nevertheless a very brief season. And since traveling requires ample time and planning, it would be ill-advised to plan your trip in a short period of time.
  3. Mass crowds at festival locations and monuments.

4. Less off-beat experience. In most countries, during high-season travel, the tourism experience might be more curated. This could lead to guests having a less authentic holiday. For instance, in the summer, I met one of our clients who was traveling solo. We shared a hug, exchanged numbers, and chatted briefly. I wonder if this kind of experience is possible during other times, when places are afloat with tourists.

5. Flat rates. During the off-season, hotels and airlines, including travel companies like ours, are more flexible to provide promotional rates.

6. Less memorable. I’ve often found that people pay more attention to you, if you are the only one in the room. Now, apply this same rule for traveling. Imagine being greeted by an extra smile by the flight attendant, or given extra care by the hotel staff. While these things may sound trivial, or even childish, they do end up adding to one’s travel experience.

I hope I’ve made my case against traveling to Bhutan in the fall. However, the season is not that bad after all. It does have its own charms– autumnal leaves and nostalgic vibes.
