On July 8, 2024, Bhutan’s King, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, along with Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, arrived in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
The visit is historic as it marks the first time Bhutan’s King has visited Mongolia.
Bhutan and Mongolia established diplomatic relations in 2012.
During the visit, the two countries signed several agreements in the sectors of agriculture, education, and tourism, among others.
His Majesty also met Khamba Lama, the head of the Buddhist monastery in Mongolia, and visited Sukhbaatar Square, where a giant statue of Genghis Khan stands.
Notably, this visit also marked the first time Druk Air, Royal Bhutan Airlines, landed in Mongolia.
Bhutan and Mongolia are both landlocked countries in Asia and share similarities in religion and customs. However, many Bhutanese do not know much about Mongolia or have not visited the country. The same is true for Mongolians regarding Bhutan. Therefore, this visit might help boost tourism between the two nations.
