GNH day will be observed on November 11 coinciding with the Fourth King’s birthday, Children’s day and Constitution Day. The National Assembly decided on shifting it from March 20, the International Happiness Day, after the issue was discussed with some Opposition members saying that it would be a disgrace to change the day it was observed because Bhutan was the one who introduced the concept of Gross National Happiness. However, the Home Minister, Lyonpo Damchoe Dorji in response said that GNH day and the International Day of Happiness were not one and the same thing. He also said that the country would observe International Happiness Day as well. At the end of the discussion, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said that if Bhutan celebrated GNH Day while all others were celebrating International Happiness Day, it might invite criticism for trying to do things differently. At the same time, he said, for the sake of future generations, that they might associate the day with the Fourth King and not with the United Nations, it would be good to celebrate the occasion on November 11.
