Opposition leader now DPT’s new party president

Druk Phuensum Tshogpa’s Opposition Leader Dr. Pema Gyamtsho was elected as the new party president over Jigmi Y. Thinley after securing 50 “yes” votes and 50 “no” votes yesterday. The new party president told local media that he was experiencing “mixed feelings” as apart from being an honour, it involved huge responsibility. However, one vice president each for party organization, economic affairs and parliamentary and legal matters were also elected to help the party president. Dr Pema Gyamtsho said the opposition would not oppose just for the sake of opposing, but they would also be cautious not to take it lying down for one wrong policy could ruin the country machinery. All other opposition members were assigned roles to look after specific ministries and areas, as is the role of “shadow ministers” in other countries. Ten percent of elected members’ salaries were contributed to the party office. Meanwhile Jigmi Y. Thinley said he wished to spend his retirement in rest.
