Rhododendron Festival – A New Initiative Altogether

The first eastern Bhutan Rhododendron Festival is set to take place from April 3rd to 9th this year. The festival will take place in the highland community of Sakteng, in Trashigang.

Another festival of the same name takes place in Lamperi, near Dochula, a popular tourist spot. Little Bhutan looks forward to travelling to Trashigang in April.

Facts about Rhododendron

This plant originates in East Asia, while some species grow in North America, Europe, and Australia. They thrive in moist, shady conditions, and people use rhododendron flowers to make tea. In Bhutan, they grow at elevations of 3,000 meters and above, flourishing in misty conditions.

Rhododendron Festival and More

The festival will be held in Trashigang, Eastern Bhutan’s largest district. We recommend taking a domestic flight to ease your travel. Since only one airline flies to this region, travelers should book their trip to Bhutan at least a month in advance.

Apart from attending the festival, travelers have the opportunity to see Trashigang, Bhutan’s largest district. Unlike western Bhutanese settlements, which traditionally lie closer to rivers, many communities here sit at high elevations. Though a quiet and unassuming town, this district is home to Bhutan’s first university and played a vital role in the country’s history. Trashigang dzong was built to ward off Tibetan invasion and it worked; The Tibetans were scared not only of the dzong, a fortress of unimaginable scale for that time, but also marveled at Trashigang’s infinite seeming landscape.

Additionally, if you are looking to extend your stay in the region, we suggest you visit Rangshikhar Monastery. The monastery is hidden, and takes hours before reaching a commune led by the head Lama and his spouse.

On the way back, travelers can fly directly to Paro and hike the world-famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. After the hike, they may choose to rest or continue their journey to Chapcha, a neighboring district.
