Why Should You Visit Bhutan?

As a Bhutanese, each time I return home, I feel removed from the rest of the world. While feeling removed can be good, especially given how omnipresent media and information have become, it can also feel strange at times. However, for tourists visiting Bhutan, this could be the ideal reason to visit the country. Following are some of the reasons why you should visit Bhutan.

  1.  Friendly People

Bhutanese people have often been deemed kind by tourists visiting Bhutan. This is true especially in the tourism industry ;I saw and experienced this for myself while on tour in Haa. The guides were highly accommodating, the driver always smiling, and the hoteliers were full of positive energy. Bhutanese people are so friendly that at times, it can feel awkward to have difficult conversations with them, such as giving feedback.

  1. Clean Air

Bhutan’s constitution mandates that at least 60% of the country be under forest coverage, for all times to come.

Bad air quality has become a growing concern for many cities around the world. However, Bhutan, due to its climate friendly policy that began since the inception of the country, has served its people as well as those visiting it well. By visiting Bhutan, tourists can also experience the luxury of breathing clean fresh air.

  1. Reduced SDF

When visiting Bhutan, tourists pay the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), which funds health care and education for the Bhutanese people. The SDF acts as a guardrail for tourists visiting Bhutan, encouraging genuine travelers. This, in turn, provides a quality and authentic experience for those visiting the country. Additionally, the SDF aligns with Bhutan’s sustainable way of life.

Prior to 2024, the SDF was USD 200. However, the government has since reduced the SDF to USD 100, until 2027.

  1. Safety

I was shocked to find that a certain country had warned those visiting Bhutan of pickpocketing and purse snatching. Till date I have never heard of such crimes taking place, or tourists being subject to them. Most Bhutanese people are trustworthy to the point where they return lost money and belongings to the police. Bhutan has a low crime rate.

  1. English Speaking Guide and Country

English is a second-language for many Bhutanese. That includes guides as well, who undergo at least three months of training to become certified. Many people in Bhutan speak English as English is the medium of instruction in schools. Therefore, Bhutan is fairly easy to navigate for tourists. Additionally, language guides are also available.

There might be other reasons to visit Bhutan, ones not included here. Whatever the case may be, I feel Bhutan is at a crucial moment, both as a country and as a people. We are looking back, while also trying to embrace what’s ahead of us. Wouldn’t you want to visit Bhutan for this very reason, to learn from us, and in return, share something of your own?
