Bhutan has a close-knit relationship with the natural world. Being the only carbon-negative country in the world, Bhutan’s constitution mandates a 60 percent forest coverage, for all times to come. This means Bhutan has clean, high-quality air, making it perfect for outdoor activities.
Over the years, in order to boost public health and for tourism purposes, the government has constructed and maintained hiking paths, which are also used for running. Two such paths are located in Thimphu, the capital. One path runs below the giant Buddha statue, and the other runs above Takin Park, both offering aerial views of the city. And many are familiar with the Tiger’s Nest, Taktsang, Hike, a steady uphill hike. We recently hiked from Chele La, the highest motorable point in Bhutan, to Paro, Kyichu. A dozen other hikes, ranging in elevations, duration and difficulties exist. Just ask your guide.
Apart from hiking, Bhutan is also suitable for spiritual retreats. While guests mainly visit the country to experience the culture, an equally growing number are also visiting for relaxation purposes. We have accommodated guests whose main purpose was to either visit a wildlife sanctuary, or do yoga in the mountains. In such cases, guests prefer to do longer tours, a minimum of ten days, giving them ample time to achieve all of their travel goals, at a slow-paced rate. Another thing Bhutan is famous for are the hot stone springs and baths found all over the country.
In Gasa, the hot springs are famous for their medicinal properties. Many visit Gasa’s hot springs with the hope to cure bone-related diseases and knee problems. Taking hot spring baths can be a unique way to immerse oneself in local culture.
With all the riches it offers, including high-quality air due to its carbon-negative status, Bhutan is relatively affordable. And booking with a travel agent like ours can make a difference; We pride ourselves on having a team with deep knowledge of the country’s culture and travel regulations, as well as a desire for exploring new destinations — sometimes with the help of our guests.
