One of only three domestic airports in Bhutan, Yonphula Domestic Airport has a unique history. Originally built in the 1960s by the Indian army as a rough air landing space, the runway was upgraded in 2017, significantly improving its facilities.
The airport has made travel to eastern Bhutan much easier. Drukair operates two flights weekly to Trashigang via Bumthang from Paro. While the airport is quite minimal, with the runway seeming brief, it serves its purpose well in connecting this remote region to the rest of the country.
