Things to do in Sarpang

Sarpang is Bhutan's south-central border district, on the plains facing Assam. The town everyone means is Gelephu — the thromde, the airport, and the site of Gelephu Mindfulness City. Sarpang town is somewhere else: the district headquarters, 30 km west. This is a district you sleep in on the way through.

Entrance fees are included in every tour we run, so there's no ticket window to queue at and no cash to carry at any of them.

What actually fits in a stop?

One night, and we'll say so plainly: Sarpang is a transit stop. Both of the itineraries that come through here give Gelephu a single night between the forest districts and the road west, and neither pretends otherwise.

On the birding trip it is 75 km and about three hours in from Tingtibi, then 97 km and about three hours out to Tsirang the next morning. On the motorbike tour it is 174 km and six hours in from Panbang, then 195 km and six hours out to Punakha. The written brief for the day in between is "explore Gelephu town".

What that buys you is the hot spring and a hot, flat border town — which is a genuine change of scene after two weeks of dzongs at 2,000 metres, and is worth the night for exactly that reason. It is not a sightseeing stop and we won't sell it as one.

Is Gelephu the same place as Sarpang?

No, and almost everything written in English about "Sarpang" is really about Gelephu.

Sarpang town — Shompangkha — is the district headquarters. Gelephu is the thromde, the big town, and it sits about 30 km east by road (a little over 20 km in a straight line). The dzongkhag administration was moved down to Gelephu in 1975 and moved back after the people of Shompangkha objected; the dungkhag office left Gelephu too, and has run from Umling since February 2019.

Our own itineraries have this right already: both of them list "Sarpang town" or "Sarpang plain" as a stop on the morning you leave Gelephu heading west.

The district's new dzong is at Sarpang town, on the same ground as the old one. BBS reported in November 2025 that it was about 90 per cent complete after more than seven years, with the sertog installed and completion expected in mid-2026; nobody has published where it has got to since, so ask us rather than plan around it.

Royal Manas is next door — and Gelephu is not how we enter it

Part of Royal Manas National Park is in Sarpang — the park spans this district, Zhemgang and Pemagatshel.

We do not go in from here. Our itineraries enter the park at Panbang, in Zhemgang — 47 km east of Gelephu in a straight line, but 174 km and about six hours by road, which is the leg the motorbike tour above rides. That gap between the map and the road is the whole reason we come at the park from the north instead of from here. Gelephu is one approach among several, and what actually sits in the town is the park's office — which is the only point on any map carrying the park's name, and is the reason so many pages elsewhere say the park is "reached from Gelephu".

Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary is the district's other protected area: 269 km² in the west, running down to the Indian border, holding Bhutan's only natural sal forest and its only chital deer, and with no human residents at all. We have no page for it and no itinerary that goes in — ask us if it interests you.

What is Gelephu Mindfulness City?

It is a Special Administrative Region — announced by His Majesty on 17 December 2023 and established by Royal Charter in December 2024 — with its own executive, its own legislature and an independent judiciary, run separately from the rest of Bhutan under what its own charter calls "One Country, Two Systems".

It is being built, not visited. The published plan runs in phases to 2045 and beyond; there is nothing to go and look at today, and the most concrete thing that has actually happened is administrative — since May 2026, Gelephu's municipal government has been the GMC Authority.

What GMC is, what has happened so far, and what a visitor can see has a page of its own, and we keep it current, because nothing else on this site goes out of date as fast.

The rest of the district

1,655 km² and 46,004 people at the 2017 census, across twelve gewogs — Chhudzom, Chhuzanggang, Dekiling, Gakiling, Gelegphu, Jigme Chhoeling, Samtenling, Senggye, Serzhong, Shompangkha, Tareythang and Umling — plus 61 chiwogs, one dungkhag at Umling and Gelephu Thromde.

The district runs from about 200 m to about 3,600 m. Gelephu sits at 221 m, which makes it one of the lowest places you will stand in Bhutan; the northern gewogs climb into Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. Eighty-eight per cent of the district is under forest.

Sarpang borders Assam to the south — facing India's Kokrajhar and Chirang districts — with Zhemgang east, Tsirang west and Trongsa north. It is the commercial catchment for all of them, which is why Gelephu is bigger and busier than a district this quiet would suggest.

When to come

November to March. Sarpang is southern, low and subtropical, and the dzongkhag's own list of its challenges opens with "longer monsoon season" — the rains run June to August and make both the driving and the heat hard work. Along with Zhemgang and Chhukha, this is one of the few corners of a Bhutan itinerary where you pack for humidity rather than for altitude.

Winter is also when Gelephu is at its busiest, because it is a favourite winter destination for the Bhutanese themselves — and the hot spring is a large part of the reason.
